Cherry blossoms in Branch Brook Park popped out in the space of two or three days. It seems like they were waiting for a couple of warm days to herald spring.
Cherry blossoms in Branch Brook Park are early this year
Branch Brook Park in Newark, New Jersey, has the largest and most spectacular display of cherry blossoms in the Eastern United States, including the more well known Tidal Basin display in Washington DC. It is a crown jewel of the Essex County Park system. The annual Cherry Blossom Festival takes place during the middle two weeks in April when the blossoms are usually in all their glory.
This year an unusually warm winter in the Northeast together with 80 degree temperatures the week of March 19th conspired to make the early spring flowers including daffodils, forsythia and the cherry trees, bloom weeks ahead of time. I strolled through the park on a sunny Thursday afternoon when there were just a few people enjoying the day as I was. This is some of what I saw.
